Animal Abuse in Pakistan

This dataset provides a collection of articles on animal abuse published on the Dawn website, curated using the site’s search functionality in July 2024. Each entry includes the publishing date, article title, and URL, but excludes the full article text. Covering articles from 2010 onward, the dataset offers a valuable resource for researchers, journalists, activists, and policymakers interested in analyzing trends, patterns, and public awareness of animal abuse in Pakistan over the past decade. By providing access to this metadata, the dataset supports data-driven studies and advocacy efforts aimed at understanding and promoting animal welfare.

Methodology

This dataset documents media coverage of animal abuse in Pakistan as reported on the Dawn website, with articles retrieved in July 2024. Using the search keyword “animal abuse,” we gathered all available articles, with the oldest article dating back to 2010. Each entry in the dataset includes the publication date, title, and URL of the article, but not the full article text, in line with copyright requirements. The dataset was manually verified to ensure that each entry was relevant to the theme of animal abuse, offering a timeline of media coverage on this issue over the years.

File Descriptions

The data repository contains the following file:

• animal_abuse_dawn_july2024.csv: a CSV file containing the dataset with columns for the publication date, article title, and URL of each article.

The file contains the following columns:

• ArticleDate: the publication date of the article in the format YYYY-MM-DD.
• ArticleTitle: the title of the article.
• URL: the URL of the article on the Dawn website.

Data Summary

The dataset contains 68 entries and each entry includes complete metadata without missing values, providing the date, URL, and title for each article related to animal abuse. The dataset offers a chronological view of articles, beginning in 2010, covering various aspects and events related to animal welfare and abuse issues reported on Dawn’s platform. ​​

We see an increase in the number of articles on animal abuse over the years, reflecting a growing awareness and concern for animal welfare in Pakistan. The average number of articles per year is approximately 4.85 articles, with the highest number of articles published in 2021 (10 articles).

Status

The dataset is complete and no further updates are expected.
